Impeachment of Bush Is Thinking Too Small

Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 08:50:06 PM PDT

Impeachment of Bush has been floated around by many on this site as a moral imperative: support this or be a traitor to Liberals everywhere, and a desecrator of the constitution.

Now is not the time to get sanctimonious.  In case you didn't notice, we've got a problem with this moral imperative of ours.  I would direct all of you to to examine what that document you're defending actually says.  Impeachment we can achieve, by just a simple majority.

It is, however, a case we are unlikely to win.  A Bush appointee will serve as judge for the trial.  And of course the same slim majority that's made getting any legislation of note through the Senate a bitch-and-a-half will cause problems here.  It takes a two thirds majority to convict the president.  We can't win cloture votes, for heavens sake!  Do we seriously expect these people to convict the president?  Impeachment without conviction would be a joke.  But I have a better idea, and the best part about it is that Bush will hang around long enough to enjoy it.

I am new to Kos.

Actually I'm new to finding out the truth about the atrocities that the Bush administration has been perpetrating against our American Military, the Iraqi population, as well as everybody else in the world that they have chosen to do it to.

Apathetic observer to enthusiastic supporter - my story

Sun Apr 13, 2008 at 10:59:46 PM PDT

This is my first diary, so please be gentle...

When this campaign began, I was a Gore person all the way.  I'd vote for the democrat, no matter who it was...but I was completely apathetic as to who it would actually be...I wouldn't work for them, I wouldn't donate to them...I'd vote - simple enough...

Over the course of this campaign, I have gone from apathetic observer to fervent, active, donating supporter...this is my story...

A good man to defeat Goode - Tom Perriello

Sat Mar 29, 2008 at 03:59:06 AM PDT

Probably everyone has heard of Virgil Goode, Jr. If you don’t remember the name, surely you remember the stink he raised over the swearing in of Keith Ellison, because that gentleman wanted to us a Qu’ran for his ceremonial swearing in.  For several cycles Democrats in Virginia have tried to defeat Goode in Virginia’s 5th CD, but without success.

This cycle the odds look much better.  Although several Virginia CDs will have primary contests, our candidate in the 5th is clear, and his name is Tom Perriello, on whose web page one immediately reads

We need to restore the founding American ethic that we are better off when we are in this together. Since the original thirteen colonies joined together as the United States, through Civil War and the Great Depression, we have risen or fallen according to this simple rule: America thrives when we are united in a common purpose for the common good.

If you keep reading, I hope you will learn a little bit about the 5th CD, a lot more about Tom Perriello, and perhaps decide to include him among those whom you support, especially in the final push of 1st quarter fundraising.

Take Back America and A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq

As I reflect on the Take Back America 2008 conference, I'm thrilled 21st Century Democrats was a partner organization at the event.  We are proud to stand with other great groups like Campaign for America's Future, Progressive Majority, ACORN, People for the American Way, the Center for Progressive Leadership, and many others who are working hard to change the direction of this country from the disastrous policies of George W. Bush.

Needed a Fourth Branch of Government: The People

Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 11:18:19 AM PDT

Politicians as a class are disreputable--HL Mencken

A revolution every once in a while is a good idea--Thomas Jefferson

Our government does not represent the people. It represents special interest lobbies, such as AIPAC, big oil, drug companies, etc. The depressing facts are well known:
--TheDemocrats won a mandate to stop an illegal war, but they let the war be widened; and they are about to consent to another war, before they ask for another mandate.
--Americans don't want torture, black holes, rendition, suspension of habeas corpus, eavesdropping.  The Democrats don't stop it.
--Americans don't want to take sides in the Israel-Palestinian conflict, but the administration and both parties backs Israel indiscriminantly.

It's time to control the politicians who work for lobbies and turn them into accountable civil servants: employees of the people, not statesman. The Internet can provide direct plebicitatory democracy.  A fourth branch of government created by a Constitutional amendment can provide the necessary oversight on politicians whose agendas are not in synch with ordinary Americans.

Lessons of Bush and the past unheeded, increasing numbers want Separation of Church and state Erased

Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 11:17:51 AM PDT

Lessons of Bush and the past unheeded as increasing numbers want Separation of Church and state Erased saying it never existed nor was it intended too. I would like your thoughts on this. It is very convoluted!
It is unbelievable to me too hear that the nightmare Bush has created with his purposeful infusion of his perverted Religion into our Government is not noticed by and even wanted an ever increasing number of Americans and they do not see the tremendous damage Bush and past Presidents that did this have done to the Constitution and to America. Increasing numbers are calling for the removal of Separation of Church and State and hoping to see a return to good sense I am amazed to see this happening as I expected and want just the opposite.
We cannot let this happen. It will complete the downfall of "our America" and seal the nightmare Bush is creating in his new America. Remember this and then the following cries for the removal of Separation of church and State will be put in context and be more disturbing. We cannot let this happen.

Understanding Progressives' presidential preferences through ranked polling

Tue Jun 26, 2007 at 03:30:12 PM PDT

Second choice and instant runoff polls improve on conventional polls by telling us about the breadth - not just the depth - of candidates' support. Knowing that improves our predictive capacity as the field narrows. FairVote polled the 2007 Take Back America conference last week, where its annual IRV ballot was joined by Politico.com's own second choice poll.

Progressives don't really like Hillary Clinton. Moreover, as the stakes rise and a 2008 win looks likely, the movement has no clear favorite. Yet Edwards may be able to bump his chances significantly by stroking the base of non-candidate Al Gore.

Bill Richardson Roundup:  News Review

Fri Jun 22, 2007 at 11:28:42 PM PDT

This was a significant week in Bill Richardson's campaign for President, with a major address on climate change and how to end the bloodshed in Iraq.

It was also a significant week for peace and stability in Korea and Asia - which highlights Richardson's expertise in foreign affairs and his diplomatic skills. With Richardson as President we get two for the price of one - a can-do leader on domestic issues and an experienced diplomat that knows how to bring people and nations together.

We are ALL Digby

Thu Jun 21, 2007 at 03:36:53 AM PDT

What Digby said:

The netroots – the progressive blogosphere – consists of a very lively and disparate group of citizens who are political observers, activists, readers, writers, entrepreneurs, communicating and organizing via the Internet.

We have opera-loving liberals from Georgia, NASCAR-loving progressives from Chicago, and Grateful Dead-loving Democrats from Florida. We are from everywhere, and our common tribal signifiers aren’t social status or professional authority or region.

We find each other in remote places and big cities alike, on the Internet, through our politics – period. In the blogosphere, nobody cares if you are a 70-year-old Chinese immigrant, or a 22-year-old Harvard student, or a stay-at-home blogger dad...

After Digby's speech on Tuesday, the following was posted to a new Facebook group called "We are ALL Digby".

Amy Klobuchar makes statements about Iraq War at Take Back America

Wed Jun 20, 2007 at 06:29:51 PM PDT

-- Cross-posted from mnblue.com, home of the Norm Coleman Weasel Meter --

I wasn't too pleased that our Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) voted for the Funding Supplemental and caved with the Democratic Senate leadership.  However, she spoke on a 'kitchen table' panel Monday at the Take Back America conference going on in Washington DC and talked about a strategy to end the occupation of Iraq.  This sounded much better.

Take Back America: Dem. Candidates Speak out on Global Warming

Wed Jun 20, 2007 at 04:04:31 PM PDT

Several National Wildlife Federation staff attended the Take Back America Conference yesterday.  Keynote speakers included Presidential candidates Bill Richardson, Barack Obama, John Edwards and Mike Gravel.  I took notes during the speeches on what the candidates said regarding global warming and climate change.

Digby Speaks

Wed Jun 20, 2007 at 01:45:47 PM PDT

Sinfonian has the transcript of Digby's brilliant speech last night in accepting the Paul Wellstone award on behalf of the progressive blogosphere at the Take Back America Conference.  Here's just a snippet. While it's a shame to actually edit Digby, this is intended to whet your appetite, so you'll read the whole thing. Bookmark it. Commit it to memory. And, of course, get in the habit of reading her.

As there has been a lot said recently about the netroots and our influence on the Democratic Party, this is especially rewarding. Let’s just say we’ve ruffled some feathers. We’ve been called everything from "some guy named Vinnie in a bathrobe in an efficiency apartment" to "blogofascists." Some critics dismiss us as useless elites, the "Metropolitan Opera crowd," or a noisy Upper West Side cocktail party for the college graduate class. Still others take us to task for our vitriolic, unhinged tone.

The other day, Tim Russert agreed absolutely with his gracious host, the concerned centrist Sean Hannity, that the Democratic Party was being unduly influenced by bloggers, who were dragging the Party kicking and screaming to the Left. Then there is the criticism that we are fascists or Stalinists, demanding that everyone march in lockstep to the edicts of our leadership – generally assumed to be Markos, of Daily Kos, who apparently directs us with secret signals deeply embedded in the code of the Daily Kos website, while we carry on an elaborate ruse of spirited political debate and disagreement in public. We are, in short, something of an enigma. I like to call this phenomenon "Irrational Fear of Hippies." And this has, in my view, become irrational fear of political passion.

Of all the criticisms I just mentioned, that is one that we are all willing to accept. We are passionate about politics, and in this era of Republican corruption, excess, and failure, that passion sometimes manifests itself as anger. But how can you not be angry? So many institutions have failed us in the last decade that being vitriolic seems the only sane response....

[A]ll of us who blog in the progressive blogosphere have a common goal. It’s the same goal of virtually everyone in this room tonight. We want to begin a new era of progressive politics and take back America. We may argue about tactics and strategy, or the extent to which we are partisans versus ideologues (and believe me, we do), but there is no disagreement among us that the modern conservative movement of Newt and Grover and Karl and Rush has proven to be a dangerous cultural and political cancer on the body politic. You will not find anyone amongst us who believes that the Bush Administration’s executive power grab and flagrant partisan use of the federal government is anything less than an assault on the Constitution. We stand together against the dissolution of habeas corpus and the atrocities of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, and we all agree that Islamic terrorism is a threat, but one which we cannot meet with military power alone. And yes, a vast majority of us were against this mindless invasion of Iraq from the beginning, or at least saw the writing on the wall long before Peggy Noonan discovered that George W. Bush wasn’t the second coming of Winston Churchill....

And so here we are – the famously vituperative, angry bloggers, standing before you today politely accepting this award as proud, full-fledged inheritors of the great liberal and progressive political traditions of America. On behalf of all of them and netroots activists, and especially on behalf of our dear friend, Steve Gilliard, a fighting liberal of both the old the new schools, I thank you again for inviting us to your party. Our party rages on, 24/7, all over the blogosphere, and we’d love it if all of you would stop by frequently. Thank you.

Some "booing" going on at "Take Back America" Conference

Wed Jun 20, 2007 at 09:43:09 AM PDT

Sen. Hillary Clinton being booed during her remarks is likely to be the big story coming out of Day 3 of Take Back America.  Wow, she was at this same convention last year and was booed then.  It appears to be a distinctive disconnect between "Washinton, DC" and "everybody else" in America.  This is a problem with Clinton.

Sen. Hillary Clinton was booed again this morning at the Take Back America conference, sponsored by the lefty activist group Campaign for America's Future here in Washington.  At this same conference last year, Sen. Clinton was booed for her position on the war in Iraq.
